Launch of the Individual Giving and Philanthropy in Türkiye 2024 Report
On Tuesday, 17 December, we hosted a launch event to present the key findings from the Individual Giving and Philanthropy in Türkiye 2024 Report, which explores trends and changes in the field of individual giving.
The report, published every three years, was authored by Prof. Dr. Ali Çarkoğlu and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Güneş Ertan from Koç University’s Center for Civil Society and Philanthropy Research. During the event, Senem Başyurt, General Manager of the Mother Child Education Foundation (AÇEV), and Liana Varon, Head of Intelligence and Action at WINGS, joined us for a discussion moderated by Rana Kotan, TÜSEV’s Secretary General.
Key Highlights from the Report
- Disaster Giving: Following the earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş on 6 February 2023, 25% of donations were made directly to civil society organisations (CSOs). This rate surpassed donations made directly to individuals in need or through public organisations.
- Increase in Volunteering: The volunteer rate within CSOs rose from 6% in 2004 to 13% in 2024. However, between 2021 and 2024, the volunteering rate either stagnated or declined.
- Regular Giving: While 65% of individuals reported making donations after the earthquake, only 13% continued as regular donors. This small, sustained group represents an important step toward fostering a philanthropic culture in Türkiye.
- Trust in Institutions: In 2024, trust in both public institutions and CSOs remained low. This lack of trust hinders the full utilization of financial and human resources during times of crisis.
